Characteristics of the breed

Origin

Maine coon is one of the oldest natural breeds of semi-longhair cats originating from North America. It is believed that its origins were just in Maine (and to this day maine coon is the official cat of this state). In Poland, the first maine coons appeared in 1987.

Look

Although myths about maine coons weighing 15 kilograms and more are exaggerated, cats of this breed belong to one of the largest domesticated cats. They are tall, with a muscular build and thick bones. Adult males usually weigh between 7 and 10 kg, the females are smaller and usually weigh between 4 and 6 kg. Rich fur makes these cats look heavier than they really are. His silhouette is slender, muscular, elongated. Limbs strong, of medium length, with large feet, heavily hairy between the fingers. Long tail, very fluffy, especially thick in winter.

Tail is the pride and distinctive character of the breed. Its length is equal to the length of the body, which makes the cat’s silhouette even more impressive. The maine coon’s cat’s head is large, wedged, with clearly separated muzzle, prominent cheekbones, strong beard, long nose with a distinct breakthrough. Ears big and pointed, with abundant hair brushes.

Robe and ointment

The maine coon cat fur is thick and thick, protecting against cold and water. It consists of soft, rich undercoat and strong, long cover hair. The length of the fur is varied – on the stomach, breast, tail, hind legs and in the genital area it is longer, while on the back, shoulders and forelegs it is shorter. Maine coon cats are available in all color variations except for chocolate, cinnamon, lilac and Siamese color point markings. The most common is striped brindle (tiger, mottled and classic). The eyes are large, slightly sloping, with a characteristic so-called The “look” that gives him childish grace. Different types of white animals are allowed.

Character

Maine coons are growing up slowly and full adulthood usually reach 3-4 years. Usually, throughout their lives, they retain the tendency to play found in other races only in small kittens. Maine coon cats are popular not only because of their elegant, impressive appearance, but also by their wonderful character. Despite their large size and dangerous posture, they are very gentle, balanced and patient animals. They are very sociable and curious, they quickly become attached to people, although they usually only give one of their family members a great cat’s love. These cats are very attached to humans. Making contacts is a real pleasure for Maine Coon. Maine Coon is a great friend of children. He likes the company of other cats. He lives in friendship with dogs. He is strong and very agile. He likes to sit on the highest furniture. He is a great hunter.

Maine coons like to participate in all home activities. Most willingly, they would always be in the company of a man “helping” in all housework. Also the sounds they emit are quite unique – they have a very characteristic tone of voice (colloquially called “spolling”), which they use to express various things – from announcing their life needs, to persuading a man to play together. Maine coons love to play, many of them also like retrieving smaller items. Quite rarely meow, and if it happens to them, their high tone completely does not match their size! Maine Coon cats are also known for their ease of falling asleep in any pose and anywhere.
